What Are Cookies?

Cookies are small text files that a website places on your device when you visit it. They are widely used to make websites work, to improve efficiency, and to provide information to the site's owners.

Cookies can be “session cookies” — which expire when you close your browser — or “persistent cookies”, which remain on your device for a set period or until you delete them.

Cookies are set either directly by the website you are visiting (“first-party cookies”) or by third-party services that provide functionality embedded in the website (“third-party cookies”).

Types of Cookies We Use

We use the following categories of cookies on NovaEnglish. See the cards above for the specific cookies in each category.

Essential Cookies (Always Active)

These cookies are strictly necessary for the Service to function correctly. They enable core functionality such as user authentication, session management, and language preferences. Without these cookies, you cannot log in or use any authenticated features. You cannot opt out of essential cookies.

Functional Cookies

Functional cookies allow the Service to remember choices you have made — such as your preferred colour scheme — and provide enhanced, more personal features. These cookies do not track your browsing activity across other websites. You can disable these, but doing so may affect your experience.

Analytics Cookies

We use privacy-respecting analytics to understand how users navigate NovaEnglish so we can improve the product. Analytics data is collected anonymously — we cannot identify individual users from this data. We do not use advertising analytics or share this data with ad networks. You may opt out of analytics cookies at any time.

Third-Party Cookies

Some of the services we embed may set their own cookies. These are governed by the privacy policies of the respective third parties:

  • Supabase: Sets authentication-related cookies for session management
  • Stripe: Sets cookies on payment pages for fraud prevention and checkout functionality

We do not use third-party advertising cookies or allow advertising networks to set cookies on NovaEnglish. We do not participate in cross-site tracking for advertising purposes.

Local Storage & Session Storage

In addition to cookies, we use the browser's local storage and session storage APIs to store certain information on your device:

  • Assessment progress: Your answers and timer state during an active assessment are stored in session storage so you can navigate between sections without losing progress. This data is cleared when you close the browser tab.
  • UI preferences: Certain interface states (e.g., sidebar open/closed, dismissed modals) are stored in local storage to persist between visits.

You can clear local storage and session storage through your browser's developer tools (usually under Application → Storage).

Managing Your Cookie Preferences

When you first visit NovaEnglish, you will see a cookie consent banner. You can use this banner to accept all cookies, reject optional cookies, or customise your preferences by category.

You can update your cookie preferences at any time by clicking “Cookie Settings” in the footer of our website.

Note: if you reject optional cookies on one device, this preference is stored locally and will not apply if you use a different browser or device.

Browser Settings

You can also control cookies through your browser settings. Most browsers allow you to:

  • View what cookies are set on a site
  • Delete specific cookies or all cookies
  • Block all cookies or cookies from specific sites
  • Set rules for cookie handling on a per-site basis

Here is how to manage cookies in common browsers:

  • Chrome: Settings → Privacy and security → Cookies and other site data
  • Firefox: Settings → Privacy & Security → Cookies and Site Data
  • Safari: Preferences → Privacy → Manage Website Data
  • Edge: Settings → Cookies and site permissions → Cookies and site data

Impact of Disabling Cookies

The impact of disabling cookies depends on the type:

  • Essential cookies disabled: You will not be able to log in or use any authenticated features. The Service will be mostly non-functional.
  • Functional cookies disabled: The Service will work, but your preferences (e.g., language, theme) will not be remembered between sessions.
  • Analytics cookies disabled: No impact on functionality. You will simply not be counted in our anonymous usage statistics.

Updates to This Policy

We may update this Cookie Policy from time to time to reflect changes in our cookie usage or applicable laws. When we make significant changes, we will update the “Last updated” date at the top of this page and, where appropriate, notify you via the app or by email.

We encourage you to review this policy periodically to stay informed about how we use cookies.
